May 18, 2000 - Qilan Technical Note #2

Subject: Tips for downloading Qilan via Mac OS 8.6 or later.

Frequently people are downloading Qilan using a Mac OS machine because their OS X Server machine is not directly connected to the internet. Please be aware that a normal web browser downoad of the site .hqx files with helper applications enabled will result in a corrupted .mpkg file. Either download the file using your browser with helper applications disabled or copy the link from the web page and paste it into a dedicated FTP program such as Fetch or Anarchie to get the file. The helper applications for these programs can also be disabled but are better controlled. A normal download with helper applications will leave the intermediate files on your desktop.

tar.gz.sit.hqx, -->tar.gz.sit, -->.tar.gz., --> .mpkg.

Alternatively, with no helper applications enabled, use Stuffit until a .tar.gz file is produced. The important item to note is to copy the tar.gz file (not a corrupted .mpkg) to your Mac OS X server volume. Alternatively, you can access the tar.gz file on the MacOS volume via the Mac OS X Server window manager. We recommend the use of Scott Anguish's excellant OpenUp program (available on the StepWise site) to handle the final translation of the tar.gz file into the .mpkg file for installation.

OpenUp can normally take an .hqx file and translate it all the way into a .mpkg. Unfortunately OpenUp doesn't support the latest Stuffit file format and will result in an error code.
